Chemistry In Medicines Essay

CHEM 131 Drug Essay Assignment—50 pts

Pick a drug of your choosing and write a three page paper summarizing TWO peer reviewed journal articles about the drug.  You should look for papers that discuss its chemical structure, how it acts in the body (chemical reactions) and its medical relevance (how does it correct a medical problem).  You must use as a reference and discuss at least (2) peer-reviewed scientific journal articles describing recent research (within the past twenty years) on this drug

Your essay should meet the following criteria:

·        No more than double-spaced, 12 pt font (Times New Roman or similar); 1” margins

·        Appropriate citation format per ACS Style Guidelines: http://chemistry.library.wisc.edu/writing/acs-style-guidelines.html#print-editions

·        No plagiarism (from points lost à to an appointment with the VP, depending on severity)

·        No Wikipedia or website references except by permission of instructor

·        Journal articles cited in paper attached in hard copy or PDFs to submitted essay

·        References page

Essay will be due November 1st, by 11:59 PM (Canvas submission ONLY) or in class (1:00 PM) for hard copy submission.

Your paper should include the following sections:

Summary: Label the summary section ‘Summary’. The summary should be a short version of the articles.  It should be four or five paragraphs.

Responses:  Label this section ‘Response’. This should be at least seven well-developed paragraphs. In a response you provide the reader with your informedthoughts. You should consider one or two of the following in your response. The two bolded questions are MANDATORY for the Response:

What do you find interesting about the articles?  What made you select these articles?

How does it relate to other things that you have learnt in this class or other classes or your textbook?

How does it relate to other things that you have read or seen in the news?

Do you have a particular interest in this drug? Why?

What does it make you think about?

Is the drug useful? Explain, with particular focus on its chemical reaction with the body.

Does it worry you?  Why?

Do you think the articles do a good job explaining what the drug does?  Explain why you feel that way.

Does this relate to your future? Are you interested in this sort of research?

If the article is about the hazards of the drug, discuss what makes it a hazard (rare event, disastrous interactions with other biological processes, etc.)

You MUST include copies of the original articles:  This is important because I cannot grade your work without it. PLEASE submit the reference articles as hard copies or PDFs only!

The field of chemistry I have chosen is in the medical area. It’s formerly known as Medicinal chemistry. Medicinal chemistry is a field that links many scientific disciplines and allows for collaboration with other scientists in researching and developing new drugs. This field also seeks to improve current drugs. Medicinal chemists work in academic environments, pharmaceutical companies or government agencies, such as the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. Working in these types of jobs requires a lot of responsibility because you’re working in a field that deals with the lives of people.

Medicinal chemistry have wide variety of lab opportunities in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies. Each lab environment is unique in regards to daily activities. In some cases, laboratory work is not always required, for example, when reviewing drug applications at the FDA. However, most of the work takes place in laboratories. Many types of instruments are used in medicinal chemistry. Depending on the work environment, the types of instruments used can vary greatly.

Some instruments used include a chemical microwave, a rotary evaporator, freeze-dryers, fume hoods, and a vast amount of other instruments. Chemical microwaves are used in chemistry by applying the microwave radiation to cause chemical reactions. Chemical microwaves also act as high frequency electric fields and will generally heat any material. Rotary evaporators are devices used in chemistry for efficient removal of solvents from samples using evaporation.

Freeze-dryers are used in science to preserve materials by freezing it and then reducing the surrounding pressure to allow the frozen Quiroa 2 water in the material to sublimate directly, thus removing the water in the material. Fume hoods are used in chemistry as ventilation devices to limit exposure to dangerous or toxic fumes, vapors, or dusts. Overall, many instruments used in medicinal chemistry are also used in chemistry and science. To obtain a job in this field of chemistry, it requires a certain level of education, degree, and experience as well. People are required to have research experience, advanced degrees.

(especially in organic chemistry), and at least two years of post-doctoral experience. It is also very good to have a strong background in organic chemistry and biochemistry. A number of universities have medicinal chemistry departments, often associated with biological chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, or pharmacy programs. The salary for working in medicinal chemistry is actually very good. The average salary is $119,000 per year. Overall, the education requirements is a lot, but in the end, it’ll all be worth it.

I have chosen medicinal chemistry as my topic. Why did I choose such a unique type of chemistry? Well, I actually plan on becoming a pharmacist as an option for my future career. Pharmacists work a lot in chemistry, combining things to make certain drugs for people to use. Medicinal chemistry works with medicine, and so do pharmacists. Also, doing research on this also allowed me to explore and gain more knowledge about medicinal chemistry. When I saw all the data and other information about it, I was a bit shocked at first, seeing all the requirements and responsibilities, then I realized that it isn’t too bad.

Chemistry and science in the medical field has always astounded me and fascinated me with all the new information and current information available. That’s why I chose to medicinal chemistry as my topic for this report. Medicinal chemistry is an astounding and vast field. Specifically, this type of chemistry allows the development and improvement of drugs. The types of instruments used and setting is Quiroa 3 unique on its own, with a broad range of instruments available to use.

Education and experience is vital in order to work in this field, and the salary is well worth all the education needed to go through. Personally, this field of chemistry has greatly influenced my career choice in the future and is also a very important field in chemistry because without it, neither drugs nor medications would exist.
